Pretty painted horses going nowhere
preserve the illusion;
fun of the fair
embalmed.
Not a mechanical failure,
this stasis. One feels
the music might start up at any moment
the march continue, the tango
tango on, the Wurlitzer waltz
whirl. Heads thrown back whinnying
alive with gold and turquoise
silver shod, grey-maned, red-throated
life
proudly presents the B flat chord — ta-daa!
Silent
the shellac book of notes is
still.
The last ride’s done.
A simple stepping off.
