Anna and Pete can identify dry rot, marble statues in the manner of Polycleitus, and Capability Brown gardens. They visit National Trust buildings at weekends.
Anna has aspirations of owning a chandelier. Even a terrace in Burnley could accommodate a chandelier, she thinks.
Pete collects brochures – furtively: trekking in Mongolia, navigating the South Sea Islands.
Anna impulse purchases a chandelier on eBay, draining their holiday savings. Everyone is attracted to the light, invited to admire the centrepiece.
The chandelier reflects a multitude of faux Murano glass Petes – all with different expressions. None of them happy. All of them claustrophobic.
