Happy National Poetry Day

The Girl With Obsidian Eyes

by Sarah Flint

You sit there
Girl with Obsidian eyes
Behind the Primark counter
Asking for my money
In dulcet tones of boredom.
How can I resist your charms
Girl with Obsidian eyes?
Your thick wrists
Your plump waist
Your white-sheet skin.
Can I rescue you
Girl with Obsidian eyes?
I want to take you
From this windowless mausoleum
And place you in the sunlight
To see you grow.
Perhaps then your dead black eyes
And pallid cheeks
Will absorb the colours of a world
That you can’t see
With your Obsidian eyes.
Oh girl with Obsidian eyes
Run while you can
Away from the frills and sparkle,
The fakery and trickery,
So I can see your eyes shine.

In Praise of Minor Earthquakes

by Paul Blaney

Oh, nothing earth-shattering please,
No Poseidon wielding trident,
No real shaking required
But a curious, gentle rocking,
Unforeseen plucking as of
Finger on wire.

As with contents so in people (snowglobes)
Some settling may occur —
Confirmed in comfortable habits
We need the odd tremor
Mild, surprise quivering
To set us back astir.

I loved both these poems. I hope to see a lot more work from both poets.
